When an armored vehicle is the right call
Most protected travel does not need armor. A well-planned route, a trained chauffeur, an unmarked late-model SUV and a detail that knows its job manage the risk for the great majority of executive and VIP movements. Armor becomes the right answer when a threat assessment says so: a principal with a specific, credible threat; a city or a district where kidnapping or armed robbery of vehicles is a known pattern; a high-profile visit at a sensitive moment; or an insurer’s requirement for a named traveller.
The network does not decide that for you. The decision belongs to your security lead or risk provider, and the desk’s job is to source the vehicle, the chauffeur and the logistics that the decision calls for.
Vehicles and protection levels
Armored vehicles are civilian SUVs and sedans that have been rebuilt by a specialist converter with ballistic glass, armored panels, run-flat tyres and reinforced suspension and brakes. Protection is described by recognised test standards — the European CEN and VPAM classes are widely used, with B6 or VR7 and B7 or VR9 the levels most often requested for executive work. The desk asks the operator for the converter, the certified level and the age of each vehicle, and passes that information to you before you commit.
Typical vehicles include armored versions of the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, Toyota Land Cruiser, Mercedes-Benz G-Class and S-Class Guard, and BMW 7 Series Protection. Exactly which is available depends on the city and the week.
Chauffeurs trained for protective driving
An armored vehicle is heavier, slower to stop and slower to turn than the car it started as. Chauffeurs assigned to armored work are trained in protective and evasive driving for that weight, in route selection and in the drills your detail will expect. They drive to the movement plan the detail leader sets, keep communications with the detail open, and do not improvise routes.
- Chauffeurs with protective and evasive driving training for armored weight
- Vehicles from specialist converters, with the certified protection level stated in writing
- Advance and follow vehicles in the same or a lower class, on request
- Route reconnaissance before the first movement where the detail asks for it
- Coordination with your security lead, who directs every movement
- Discretion as standard: unmarked vehicles and a non-disclosure agreement
How an armored booking is quoted
Send the desk the principal’s travel dates, the cities, the number of vehicles, the protection level your assessment calls for and the contact details of your security lead. The desk asks member operators who run certified armored fleets in those cities for availability, confirms the vehicle specifications and the chauffeurs’ qualifications, and returns a single written quote in US dollars, all-in with taxes and a 20% gratuity, with any repositioning of vehicles between cities shown separately.
Armored vehicles cannot be conjured at short notice in every city. In some markets they are plentiful; in others there may be two in the country. Lead times are part of the quote.
What the network does not provide
The network supplies armored vehicles and the chauffeurs who drive them. It does not provide close protection officers, weapons or threat assessments, and it does not describe itself as a security company. Where you need those services, your own provider leads; if you do not have one, the desk can introduce licensed protection companies in the destination country, and the arrangement is then between you and them.
Unarmored work for protective details — security-trained chauffeurs in standard SUVs — is covered on the executive protection drivers page, and can be booked by the month on a monthly block.
Armored vehicles and borders
Armored vehicles are controlled items in many countries. Moving one across a border can require import or transit permits, and some governments restrict who may operate them at all. For multi-country itineraries the desk asks operators in each country what they can lawfully run, and plans either a vehicle that holds the necessary permits or a change of vehicle at the border. Where a country does not permit privately operated armored cars, the desk will say so rather than offer a workaround.
Before the first movement
The most useful thing a security lead can send is a movement plan: addresses, timings, the principal’s preferences and the detail’s communication arrangements. The operator uses it to position vehicles, confirm the chauffeurs’ familiarity with the routes and agree how the chauffeur will receive changes on the day. Vehicle specifications, chauffeur names and contact numbers go to the detail lead in writing before the principal arrives, and nobody outside the account is told who is being carried.
When the armored requirement ends but the visit continues, the remaining days can move to unarmored SUVs with security-trained chauffeurs at the published hourly rates, so the principal keeps the same team.
Where armored vehicles are available
Certified armored fleets are most readily available through member operators in Mexico City, São Paulo, Bogotá, Lagos, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Riyadh, Dubai, Istanbul, London, Paris, Washington, New York, Miami and Los Angeles, and can be positioned to many other cities with notice. The desk will tell you honestly when a city cannot be served in the time available.

Discretion & NDA
Confidentiality written down, not just promised
Dedicated, diplomatic and high-profile work can run under a signed non-disclosure agreement from the first booking. The network works this way for:
Ministries and government officesEmbassies, consulates and missionsPublic figures and talentAthletes and their teamsTouring artists and crewsBoards, founders and family offices
The agreement comes first
Send us your non-disclosure agreement, or ask for ours, and it is signed before a name, an address or a flight number reaches dispatch. Every chauffeur and coordinator assigned to you also gives a personal written pledge of confidentiality.
Need-to-know scheduling
Only the assigned chauffeur, the relief chauffeur and the coordinator can see the diary. The passenger can travel under a code name that appears on the booking, the arrival board and the invoice in place of their own.
Phones away
No photographs, no video, no posts and no conversation about who was carried, where they went or who they met. Operators on the network accept that standard as a condition of receiving this work.
Arrivals planned in advance
Service doors, underground bays and private terminals are agreed before the day. Vehicles carry no livery and tinted rear glass, and a name board is only held up in a public hall when you ask for one.
Chauffeurs chosen for the brief
Background-checked, licensed for the class, experienced with protocol, security details or talent, and briefed on your preferences before the first pickup rather than on the kerb.
Records kept short
Trip data is limited to what the agreement and local law require, held by the account team only, and released to nobody without your written consent unless a court or regulator compels it.

Questions about armored car service with chauffeur
How much does an armored car with a driver cost?
Every armored booking is quoted to the requirement, because the protection level, the vehicle, the city and any repositioning all change the price. Quotes are in US dollars and include taxes and a 20% gratuity.
What protection level should we book?
Your security lead or risk provider should set it from a threat assessment. B6/VR7 and B7/VR9 are the levels most often requested for executive travel; the desk confirms the certified level of each vehicle in writing.
Do you provide bodyguards?
No. The network supplies armored vehicles and protective-driving chauffeurs. Close protection is provided by your own detail or a licensed provider the desk can introduce.
Can armored vehicles be booked by the month?
Yes, where an operator can commit a vehicle for the period. Monthly armored service is quoted to the requirement, with the terms set in a written agreement.
Will the chauffeur sign an NDA?
Yes. Your non-disclosure agreement, or ours, is signed before any movement details are shared.
Can an armored vehicle cross a border with us?
Sometimes. Armored vehicles often need import or transit permits and some countries restrict their operation. The desk checks each country and plans a permitted vehicle or a change at the border.
How much notice do you need?
It depends on the city. Where certified armored fleets are local, a few days may be enough; where a vehicle must be repositioned from another city or country, allow considerably longer. Lead time is stated in the quote.
Can we add unarmored cars for the rest of the party?
Yes. Staff and advance cars can be booked from the published rate card, from $155 an hour all-in, and run under the same coordinator as the armored vehicle.
